Private Online Instruction Information:

Determine what area(s) you want to concentrate on initially and how often you want to have a lesson. This can be flexible, as I know everyone has a life outside of music. However, maintaining consistency is also important as it promotes the greatest amount of positive results.

  • Lesson Intervals: Weekly, bi-weekly (every other week) or monthly.

  • Lessons are $85 each. You may pay for as many at a time as you wish. Payment may be made via personal check or money order (USA), bank check in US currency (International) or credit card via Paypal (paypal.com).

  • General Lesson Topics (keep in mind that these are general topics only and that any lesson could involve all three at the same time):
    1. Contemporary Composition: My source for this topic is a 12 - pitch (or 12- tone) row that you will create. This is only a source, however, as it will be shown how to use this source in a multitude of ways. Using these pitches, music can be created that is very diatonic (melody and harmony for pop and rock styles), serial/atonal (film scoring and situations where high amounts of chromaticism is desired), and everything in between.

    2. Arranging: this topic is quite broad but can cover a wide variety of styles and instrumentations ranging from jazz or rock trio to big band. Vocal styles can also be explored.

    3. Orchestration: this topic covers all aspects of instrumental exploration including ranges, transpositions, individual characteristics and how various combinations have been used to create certain sounds. This is mainly from an acoustic perspective, but could also touch on electronic aspects also as there are many things that wouldn't be done acoustically, but may be easily explored electronically.
  • Lessons include:
    1. Written materials (pdf's etc)
    2. MP3 examples where applicable
    3. Detailed assignment comments
    4. Online Chat discussions (At present via Yahoo Messenger. This is a free service.)
  • Software Needed: In general, Finale, Sibelius Digital Performer or Logic should be fine. If creating files in a format other than previously mentioned, you will have to create a PDF of your work and an MP3 (audio) to send with notated assignments.

You may also send handwritten assignments as long as you have access to a scanner that can create a pdf to send via the Internet. In this case you would also need a sequencing program to create audio for some assignments.
